Skating at Adult Nationals

After a frantic (and therefore sloppy) performance at the Midwestern Figure Skating Sectionals in Indy in March, my goals for Nationals were to stay calm, enjoy the moment and land all my jumps on one foot.

“Sell it!” said my coach Peter Biver. “Then maybe the judges won’t notice if a jump [or two] is slightly under rotated.”

An Empty Egg

This week I dug an old Easter basket out of storage and set it in the center of our dining table. It’s decorated with silk flowers, and on the bed of supermarket grass in the basket are ten plastic Easter eggs.

"I’m Mary,” my three-year-old grand daughter told us. She arranged a silky scarf over her head and tried to fold her hands piously, but the scarf kept slipping off. She grasped it in one hand and reached for her little brother. “This is Baby Jesus.”

According to the song, "Joseph was an old man" so perhaps Grandpa can have that role in the picture. Nine-month-old Alex was more interested in reaching for toys and standing by furniture than lying in an imaginary manger, so the pose didn't last very long. Forget that “no crying he makes” part.
